1) Volunteers needed for Thursday and Friday for fundraising paddle.
The Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance is kindly arranging the delivery
of a floating dock on Thursday for us to use on Friday for a fundraiser
with the Young Men's/Women's Real Estate Association of New York.
On Thursday, we'll need volunteers to tow in the dock from the mouth of
Anable Basin and to secure it. On Friday we'll need volunteers to guide
the short trip, up to the Silvercup Studios property and the down to
Queens West and back. This is expected to bring in up to $1000 for the
boathouse, and perhaps more in further sponsorships, so please join us!
2) Volunteers invited to escort Swim Across America, July 29.
The LIC Community Boathouse will support Swim Across America in the
Long Island Sound
(http://www.swimacrossamerica.org/long_island/index.html). The event
benefits research efforts to cure cancer. Please register online
immediately, and inform us of your intent to participate. You will be
given a chance to honor a person as a tribute or memorial. If you don't
have anyone particularly in mind, please consider Leonard V. Quigley,
the father of Matt Quigley of Plaxall, who has done so much for us.
Leonard died in November of last year and Matt's mom will be swimming
in the event.
We are currently arranging boat transportation.
3) Hallets Cove Committee forming. Several members of our community
have already joined. We will meet at a time arranged through our
DISCUSS list.
Background: We have received positive whispers from both city and state
agencies about placing a shipping container boathouse on the concrete
platform toward the northern end of Hallets Cove. But we need to craft
a strong, clear proposal for usage of the site, which has three
significant stakeholders, the Economics Development Corporation, Small
Business Services, and the NY State Department of Transportation. The
NYC Department of Parks and Recreation might also have an interest,
given the wetlands restoration adjacent to it and the support they have
given our boating program.
Emily Maxwell, the Partnerships for Parks catalyst coordinator for the
LIC waterfront has kindly agreed to meet with us and advise us as we
write the proposal.
4) We have a new secretary (or whatever title fits best)! Please
welcome R. Lea Singer, the first LIC Community Boathouse volunteer to
undertake this challenging mission. Not only will she provide a great
guiding spirit as a longtime community activist and volunteer, but she
will whip us into shape as an organization. Please drop a note to
volunteer director Travis Perry (travmich at integrity.com) if you'd like
to assist Lea with, among other things:
a) fashioning a more reliable and streamlined waiver process for our
work in Hallets Cove/Socrates Sculpture Park.
b) producing literature to promote the boathouse.
c) coordinating regular meetings of the boathouse and its projects.
5) Along these lines, we also need people to assist the finance
director, Norma Ruane, volunteer director, Travis Perry, arts/event
director, John McGarvey, education director, Steve Lang, and science
education coordinator Katie Tikkun.
6) TRIPS!
It's not too late to join our Manhattan Circumnavigation on Saturday,
July 15. Please write to this address to express your interest, but
please be mindful that it's a long trip under a July sun...90 degree
heat forecasted.
Also tentatively scheduled for July 22 is a trip to Snug Harbor
Cultural Center (http://www.snug-harbor.org). This is one of our most
challenging but rewarding trips.
7) We still need help with Jacob Riis Settlement's kids. Please let us
know how you might make this a great summer for them!
8) We still need sponsors! PLEASE give it a shot -- an employer? A
client? A friend?
Warm regards,
Erik
