Ahoy’all!

Lot’s of joy.

1. BASTILLE DAY! (Liberte!)

We’ll be paddling north, through Hell Gate, on Saturday (see calendar)
to view Rikers Island, ponder crime and punishment, and recognize that
many people in this world, and even in our own society, are unjustly
deprived of freedom because of religion, sexuality, questionable drug
policies, and politics.

2. LOTTERY (Equalite!)

The boathouse is instituting a lottery system for overbooked trips
from now on to ensure that new folks get to enjoy their estuary. First-
come-first-serve tends to favor those in the know. Naturally, we will
put aside a couple of seats for steady, dedicated volunteers,
sponsors, local mucky-mucks who can help the boathouse, media, and
allies.

3. NEW LIGHTS (Fraternity! Since they make us better harbor community
members)

Thanks to our February fundraiser at the Foundry
(http://www.thefoundry.info) and a 10% discount from New York Kayak
Company (http://www.nykayak.com), we have 10 new white Tek Tite safety
lights, each with four LEDs. Testing by paddlers, commercial vessels,
and the Coast Guard found these lights to be the most visible on
kayaks. You might recall that our first round of light purchases was
made through the generosity of the Harbor Operations Committee.

AND MORE!

As always, we need volunteers at Hallets Cove on Sundays, and we need
you to get the word out! Also, we need sponsors – without some
financing, we can’t repair and replace gear, expand the fleet, and pay
insurance. Please reach out to your clients and employers. They’ll get
recognition on our soon-to-be-revamped website, literature, and on the
sponsored boat itself!

As a landside note, each Monday night you can attend Recycle-a-
Bicycle’s FREE bike repair clinic in LIC (46th Ave and 5th Street)!
Give them a call or email them for more about this wonderful program.

RaB is in LIC in good part through the kindness of family-owned
Plaxall Inc. (http://www.plaxall.com), which also donates space to the
LIC Community Boathouse.

Salty regards,

Erik
