Hi All!

We have so much to report, and so many thanks to offer, for the
success of the Five Borough Harbor Ramble! That will come soon, but
first a few chances for fun and service!

1) TONIGHT, Sept. 11:

Please come and participate in the landside parts of this beautiful
ceremony that came to NYC years ago with help from people who would
become founding volunteers of the LIC Community Boathouse (this
article was the happy accident that started it all --
http://www.villagevoice.com/news/0223,baard,35391,1.html ). Kayak
support for the event is now coordinated by New York Kayak Company (
http://www.nykayak.com ), a private outfitter that supports free
community boating:

Special Events
Sept. 11, Tuesday, Annual 9-11 Memorial Floating Lanterns Ceremony,
from 6-9pm, south side of Pier 40 building at W. Houston St. The
ancient custom of floating lighted lanterns in waterways symbolizes
respect for the lives of people who have gone before us. It also
represents a light of hope for peace and harmony that we send over the
waters of transmigration. This very colorful, but quiet and serene
ceremony provides a place to reaffirm our commitment to building a
peaceful future and to pay respect to the lost lives at the World
Trade Center. This event is sponsored by the New York Buddhist Church,
and supported by NY de Volunteers and New York Kayak Company. Also
supported by the Buddhist Council of New York and Interfaith Center of
New York. Download a flyer for the ceremony in English or Japanese.

2) Saturday: Bronx River Waterfalls trip. Please note that all
participants must also help us contribute to the American Littoral
Society Beach cleanup at Hallets Cove and perhaps Astoria Park, under
direction of Clare Doyle of A.R.R.O.W. and Green Shores NYC: The
Astoria-LIC Waterfront Parks Alliance. No litter pickup, no paddle
adventure. See details below.

Of course you can simply participate in the shoreline cleanup
regardless of the trip!

As for the trip, this is a VERY physically demanding one. We'll be
passing through Hell Gate and up past North Brother and South Brother
islands. Wind can be a real factor around that bend. Once on the Bronx
River, we'll have to portage boats sometimes across slippery rocks and
uneven surfaces. Wear good, waterproof footwear in addition to the
usual common sense items for kayaking: water, snacks, hat, sunscreen
and sunglasses, cash (in case you need to get home from mid-trip),
aspirin, etc.

You must email trips at licboathouse.org with a note indicating your
interest and willingness to help, with BRONX RIVER in the subject
line. We plan to gather at the Anable Cove boathouse at 730AM. We'll
launch at 8AM and paddle up to cleanup spots slightly ahead of the
crowds. We'll leave some fill trash bags, and then push north to the
Bronx River at 930AM. We'll want to be back at the mouth of the Bronx
River by 230PM to head home.
