Upcoming June Events at LICCB — Sign up, Join up, Come on out!
With summer just a week away we’re ready with lots of opportunities for you to paddle! See our calendar! Our paddling events are 100% community sponsored and volunteer run. We want you to come out and play with us!
Our first Sunset Paddle of the year will be this Friday, June 14th. This event is geared for paddlers with a little bit of experience. Sign up via the Request A Trip page on our website. The trip launches from Anable Basin, at the end of 5th street in LIC, just down from our boathouse at 4601 5th St. (The boathouse is inside a beige brick building, 2 stories high, with stencil lettering on the door. It’s across from a gigantic new school.)
On Saturday June 15th, it’s a triple header. We’ll be on the water in two boroughs at once with the launching of walk up paddling at Anable Basin in LIC Queens, right behind the grand opening of LIC Food and Flea (located in the big parking lot next to our dock; and another in Brooklyn at the Gowanus Canal Canoe races and Fundraiser event. Come to paddle or just to watch and cheer.
Saturday evening there’s another sunset paddle launching from Anable Basin.
Sunday June 16th is Father’s Day so why not bring Dad & the kids out for a paddle at Hallets Cove from 1-4PM.
Also on Sunday, adults can enjoy our short and easy paddle from Anable Basin, by the boathouse, to Hallets Cove in the morning, or back to the Boathouse in the afternoon–or even both. This 1.9-mile, 40-minute trip up the east channel of the East River is not strenuous, but it’s good to be a bit familiar with a sit-on-top kayak! This trip is how we get the boats and equipment to and from the boathouse to Hallets Cove for our public walk up paddling program. You can stick around and help out on the beach–outfitting public participants with life jackets and paddles, showing them a few tips on getting a boat to go where you want it to, and launching them for their little ride in the calm and safe waters of Hallets Cove. It’s a great way to contribute and you’ll be smiling!
Sign up now at the Request a Trip page for paddling to the cove at the beginning of the day, and back to Anable Basin at the end of the day.
Volunteers can just show up at Hallets Cove to participate. It’s located at 31st Ave and Vernon Boulevard, right next to Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria. More detailed info can be found on the calendar page.
Next week it gets even better with the Summer Solstice Celebration with free walk up paddling at Hallets Cove on Friday June 21st from 5PM until the sun sets at 8:31PM. There will be lots going on next door at the Socrates Sculpture Park. If you can get off work early, join us for the short and easy afternoon one-way paddle from Anable Basin to Hallets Cove. If not, you can sign up for the return trip to the boathouse after dark!
On Saturday June 22nd, you can paddle across the river from the Queens side to Stuyvesant Cove in Manhattan in the morning, back in the evening–or do both and help us run the second ever walk up paddling program there in the afternoon. Stuyvesant Cove is one of very few places where it is possible to launch or land on Manhattan’s east side and we’d like to see it added to the NYC Water Trail permanently. You can help to bring this about by showing up to be counted and helping us demonstrate the use of the little piece of sandy beach at Stuyvesant Cove. It’s so close you can see it from Gantry Park. Even if you don’t cross the river with us, meet us there by ferry, subway or bike.
Last year’s event, in collaboration with the LES Ecology Center and the NYC Water Trail Association, was a big success. The community there was most welcoming and excited about the event and we all had a blast.
Use the Request a Trip page to sign up for river trips. For our walk up paddles at Anable Basin, Hallets Cove or Stuyvesant Cove, just show up, no advance signup for these.
Volunteers make all this happen. Please consider becoming one. Just show up, or write to us and say, “I’d like to help out”. We’re building a fun Volunteer Info section into the website that will be up soon.
Your financial contributions fund our free paddling programs. Please donate if you can.
